Over the years, I’ve helped many Senior Travelers and Retirees plan safaris across Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda, and I’ve learned that age is rarely the deciding factor in whether someone enjoys a safari. What matters much more is choosing an itinerary that matches your interests, comfort level, pace, and travel style. Some travelers in their seventies happily spend full days on game drives, while others prefer shorter drives with more time to relax at their lodge. There isn’t one perfect safari for every senior traveler, which is why I always start by understanding what kind of experience you’re hoping to have.
One of the biggest misconceptions I encounter is that African safaris are physically demanding or only suitable for adventurous younger travelers. In my experience, that’s simply not true. Many safaris involve very little walking, comfortable accommodations, excellent roads in many areas, experienced guides, and flexible schedules. With the right planning, a safari can be one of the most comfortable and rewarding holidays you’ll ever take.
That said, I don’t recommend every safari to every traveler. Some itineraries involve long driving days, multiple flights, or activities such as mountain hiking or gorilla trekking that may not appeal to everyone. My goal is never to convince you to choose the busiest itinerary. Instead, I want to help you find one that you’ll genuinely enjoy from beginning to end.
If you’re looking for incredible wildlife, comfortable accommodations, knowledgeable guides, and a pace that allows you to appreciate every moment without feeling rushed, I believe a thoughtfully designed senior safari is one of the best ways to experience East Africa.

If I could give every Senior Travelers and Retirees one piece of advice, it would be this: don’t choose your safari based only on the number of destinations you can visit. I’ve found that many people assume seeing more parks automatically means having a better experience. In reality, too much driving and constantly changing accommodations can become tiring and reduce the time you actually spend enjoying wildlife.
I also recommend thinking honestly about your preferred pace. Ask yourself whether you enjoy early morning starts every day or whether you’d rather combine game drives with leisurely afternoons overlooking the savannah. Neither option is better—they simply create different experiences.
Another detail people often overlook is vehicle comfort. Spending several hours on a game drive is much more enjoyable in a spacious 4×4 safari vehicle with comfortable seating, excellent visibility, and enough room to move around. This is especially important if you have knee, back, or hip concerns.
Accommodation location matters just as much as luxury. I usually recommend staying inside or close to national parks whenever possible. This reduces daily driving times and allows you to spend more time watching wildlife rather than traveling to and from the park.
Travel insurance is another essential consideration. I encourage every traveler, regardless of age, to purchase comprehensive insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip interruptions, and evacuation if needed. It’s one of those decisions you hope you’ll never need, but it’s always worth having.
Finally, don’t hesitate to tell me about any mobility concerns, dietary requirements, or medical conditions before booking. The more I know, the better I can recommend lodges, vehicles, and activities that make your safari enjoyable rather than challenging.
Comfortable Accommodation:Â I typically recommend well-rated lodges and tented camps that offer comfortable beds, private bathrooms, excellent dining, and easy access to common areas.
Private or Small-Group Transportation:Â Spacious 4×4 safari vehicles with experienced guides, frequent comfort stops, and flexible schedules.
Relaxed Daily Pace:Â Early morning and afternoon game drives balanced with time to rest, enjoy the lodge, or simply watch wildlife from your veranda.
Wildlife Experiences:Â Opportunities to see the Big Five, the Great Migration (seasonal), primates, birds, and spectacular landscapes throughout East Africa.
Flexible Activities:Â Optional nature walks, cultural visits, boat cruises, photography opportunities, and scenic drives depending on your interests.
Comfort Level:Â From premium mid-range lodges to luxury safari camps with personalized service.
Budget Expectations:Â Safaris can be tailored to different budgets, but I generally recommend prioritizing comfort and convenience over trying to minimize every cost.
Service Level:Â Professional safari guides, personalized itinerary planning, airport assistance, and support throughout your journey.
Trip Flexibility:Â Private safaris offer the greatest flexibility for adjusting departure times, game drive duration, and daily schedules.
Typical Trip Length:Â I usually recommend between 6 and 12 days, allowing enough time to experience several destinations without feeling rushed.
I recommend these safaris for travelers who want to experience Africa without feeling pressured to keep up with a fast-paced itinerary. Many of my senior clients tell me they value quality experiences over busy schedules, and that’s exactly how I like to plan these journeys.
These safaris are particularly well suited to couples celebrating retirement, anniversaries, or lifelong travel dreams. I’ve found that many people have waited decades to visit Africa, and they deserve an itinerary that allows them to fully appreciate the experience rather than constantly moving from one destination to the next.
Solo senior travelers also benefit from carefully planned safaris. Whether you prefer complete privacy or joining a small group, I can recommend options that provide both security and opportunities to meet like-minded travelers without feeling overwhelmed.
I also recommend these safaris for multigenerational families traveling with parents or grandparents. By choosing the right accommodations and balancing activities, it’s entirely possible to create an itinerary that everyone enjoys regardless of age.
Finally, these safaris are ideal for travelers who appreciate knowledgeable guides, comfortable accommodations, excellent wildlife viewing, and enough time to truly enjoy each destination instead of simply checking places off a list.
I also recommend these safaris for first-time visitors to Africa who may feel uncertain about what to expect. I’ve found that a well-paced itinerary, comfortable accommodations, and an experienced guide allow you to enjoy the excitement of your first safari without unnecessary stress or fatigue. When your logistics are handled properly, you can simply focus on the incredible wildlife and landscapes around you.
If photography is one of your passions, Senior Travelers and Retirees safaris are an excellent choice. Rather than rushing from one destination to another, I prefer allowing enough time at wildlife sightings so you can observe animal behavior, wait for the best lighting, and enjoy the experience without feeling hurried. In my experience, patience often leads to the most memorable photographs.
Although I believe senior traveler safaris are suitable for many people, I don’t think they’re the right choice for everyone. If your priority is fitting as many destinations as possible into a short holiday, you may prefer a faster-paced itinerary. Just remember that more destinations usually mean longer driving days, more hotel changes, and less time enjoying each location.
If you’re looking for constant physical activity, challenging hikes, or adrenaline-filled adventures every day, I would recommend considering an adventure-focused safari instead. Activities such as multi-day mountain trekking, extensive walking safaris, or demanding gorilla trekking itineraries require a different level of preparation and may not match the relaxed pace many senior travelers prefer.
Budget-conscious travelers who are comfortable with basic accommodations and long road journeys may also choose a more economical safari. However, I generally encourage senior travelers not to compromise too much on comfort. Spending a little more on better accommodations, shorter travel times, or a private vehicle often makes a significant difference to the overall experience.
I also encourage travelers with significant mobility challenges to discuss their requirements with me before booking. Many lodges and safari experiences can be adapted, but it’s important to choose accommodations, vehicles, and activities that genuinely suit your needs rather than assuming every itinerary will be equally accessible.
Ultimately, I don’t believe a safari should be judged by how much you can endure. I believe it should be measured by how much you enjoy it. Choosing an itinerary that matches your pace and comfort level almost always results in a more memorable holiday
Choosing the right safari isn’t about your age—it’s about finding an experience that matches your interests, comfort level, and the way you enjoy traveling. I’ve learned that the happiest travelers are those who feel relaxed enough to appreciate each sunrise, every wildlife encounter, and every quiet moment in nature rather than rushing from one destination to another.
When I help someone plan a Senior Travelers and Retirees, I focus on creating an itinerary that feels enjoyable from the day they arrive until the day they leave. That means balancing exciting game drives with comfortable accommodations, sensible travel times, and opportunities to slow down and truly experience East Africa. In my opinion, those details make a far greater difference than simply adding more parks to the itinerary.
I encourage you to browse my recommended Senior Travelers and Retirees safaris below and compare the different options. Whether you’re dreaming of the Big Five in Kenya, gorilla trekking in Uganda, the Serengeti in Tanzania, or combining several countries into one unforgettable journey, I’ll help you choose an itinerary that suits you rather than expecting you to fit into a standard package.
If you’re traveling with a partner, a group of friends, or planning a multigenerational family holiday, I’m happy to tailor every detail around your needs. I can recommend the right accommodations, travel pace, transportation, and activities so everyone feels comfortable and included throughout the journey.
If you’re still unsure, I’d rather help you choose the right safari than have you book the wrong one. Feel free to get in touch, and I’ll happily point you in the right direction.
Absolutely. I’ve helped many travelers in their sixties, seventies, and even eighties enjoy unforgettable safaris across East Africa. The key isn’t your age—it’s choosing an itinerary that matches your comfort level, interests, and preferred pace. With proper planning, a safari can be both relaxing and exciting.
In my experience, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda all offer excellent options, but the best destination depends on what you’re hoping to experience. If your dream is seeing large numbers of wildlife on game drives, Kenya and Tanzania are outstanding choices. If you’re interested in primates or combining wildlife with unique cultural experiences, Uganda and Rwanda may be a better fit.
Not necessarily. Most traditional safaris involve very little walking because wildlife viewing takes place from a safari vehicle. If you’d rather avoid physically demanding activities, I can recommend itineraries that focus on game drives, boat safaris, scenic landscapes, and cultural experiences instead of long hikes.
I usually recommend private safaris for senior travelers whenever the budget allows. A private safari gives you complete flexibility over departure times, game drive duration, comfort stops, and daily pace. However, if you enjoy meeting other travelers and don’t mind following a shared schedule, a small group safari can also be an excellent option.
I generally recommend comfortable lodges or luxury tented camps with excellent service, quality dining, and spacious rooms. Staying inside or close to national parks also reduces unnecessary driving each day. Comfortable accommodation isn’t just about luxury—it’s about ensuring you’re well-rested and ready to enjoy every game drive.
I’ve found that most senior travelers enjoy safaris lasting between six and twelve days. This provides enough time to experience several destinations without constantly packing and moving. If you have more time available, I often recommend adding a few relaxing nights at a beach destination such as Zanzibar after your safari.
Yes, and I actually encourage it. Every traveler has different interests, energy levels, and expectations, so I rarely believe a one-size-fits-all itinerary is the best solution. I can adjust driving distances, accommodation standards, activities, and even daily schedules to create a safari that feels comfortable for you.
In my experience, East African safaris are very safe when they’re well planned and guided by experienced professionals. I recommend following your guide’s instructions, choosing reputable accommodations, and ensuring you have suitable travel insurance. Good preparation contributes far more to a safe trip than age does.
I usually recommend booking at least six to twelve months before your preferred travel dates, particularly if you’re planning to travel during peak safari seasons. Booking early provides more accommodation choices, better flight availability, and greater flexibility when building your itinerary. It also allows enough time to organize visas, vaccinations, and travel insurance if required.
I always suggest asking yourself what kind of holiday you’ll enjoy most. If you value comfort, wildlife, excellent guiding, beautiful accommodations, and a relaxed pace, then a senior traveler safari is likely an excellent fit. If you’re unsure, I’d much rather discuss your expectations and recommend the right itinerary than have you book something that doesn’t match your travel style.
EXCELLENT Based on 9 reviews Posted on Tripadvisor Adam GVerified A tour of the Amabere caves and crater lakes Apollo is a great tour guide. He was super friendly and knowledgeable. We would recommend him to anyone! The crater lakes were stunning.Posted on Tripadvisor Gustav LVerified Unforgettable safari and tour of Murchison Falls! Apollo took my family and I to a wonderful Safari and tour of Murchison falls. I have also travelled with him by myself before. Apollo is kind, funny and a meticulous planner. He is punctual, has excellent local contacts, and superb knowledge of wildlife and culture. Asking him a question is like consulting an encyclopedia, he always knows! Apollo took us for an unforgettable experience in Murchison falls. He arranged transport, accomodation, dining, and tours at a very fair price. During the safari we were able to tour the park almost alone, and thanks to Apollos knowledge of good spots we got to see many rare animals. I would recommend Apollo and Big Predator Tours to anyone wanting to visit Ugandas parks, not just Murchison falls. You won't regret it!Posted on Tripadvisor Jasmin KVerified Great experience I can easily recommend booking your safari and chimp trecking tour with Apollo. He and our driver are great guides and planned a perfect weekend trip to us according to our wishes. :)Posted on Tripadvisor Tourist11565699005Verified Recommended We loved the tour. Apollo and his friend are very kind and have organized the trip at best. We recommend them for a wonderful experience.Posted on Tripadvisor Pien KVerified Very good!! When we were in Uganda, we went for two weekends with Apollo on safari. We saw queen Elizabeth national park, Kibale forest, Murchison falls and ziwa Rhino sanctuary. Both times we had a wonderfull experience! Apollo is very trustworthy and everything was organized very good. The best part was chimpanzees tracking in Kibale forest. We also saw lions, elephants, giraffe, rhino's and lots of other animals.Posted on Tripadvisor Jill LVerified Amazing safari, hikes and more! Apollo is an amazing organiser and guide. We went on two safari's with him. One to Queen Elisabeth Park and one to Murchison falls. Next to the amazing game drives we did in the parks, he also organised chimpansee tracking, a boat safari cruise and a hike up to the Falls. Because of the knowledge of Apollo about the best views, we saw a lot of animals and beautiful nature. Another thing why we booked him the second time is because the accomodation, food, safety and permits were all organised really well, which I think is also really important.Posted on Tripadvisor idilay kVerified Amazing trip Our trip was amazing! We went on a Safari to Queen Elizabeth and did chimpansee tracking in Kibale with Apollo and it really exceeded our expectations. The transportation, meals and accommodation were all very well organized and the whole experience really left us speechless. we also went to Murchison falls National park and to the Ziwa rhino sanctuary!Posted on Tripadvisor Nander dVerified Game changer! We had an amazing time! Apollo is very knowledgeable about the wildlife and surroundings and is very enthusiastic all round, he gave us a tour specific to our needs.
