Whenever someone asks me whether golden monkey trekking is worth including in their East African safari, my first response is usually, “It depends on what kind of wildlife experience you’re looking for.” While gorilla trekking often receives most of the attention, I’ve found that golden monkey trekking offers a completely different experience that’s equally rewarding for the right traveler. Instead of quietly observing a single gorilla family, you’ll spend your time watching energetic, playful monkeys moving rapidly through beautiful bamboo forests.
Golden monkey trekking takes place in the Virunga Mountains of Uganda and Rwanda, where these endangered primates are found only within this unique mountain ecosystem. The experience is generally less physically demanding than gorilla trekking, making it an excellent option for travelers who enjoy nature walks but may not want a long or strenuous hike.
I usually recommend golden monkey trekking to wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, birdwatchers, couples, families with older children, and travelers already planning gorilla trekking. The two experiences complement each other remarkably well because they offer very different encounters with Africa’s remarkable primates.
One misconception I often hear is that golden monkey trekking is simply a smaller version of gorilla trekking. In reality, they’re entirely different experiences. Golden monkeys are constantly moving, climbing, jumping, and interacting with one another, creating a lively and entertaining forest adventure that’s full of photographic opportunities.
If you’re trying to decide whether to include golden monkey trekking in your itinerary, I generally recommend it if you enjoy wildlife behavior, active forest walks, and seeing species that exist nowhere else in the world.
Browse my recommended tours below, or contact me if you’d like help choosing the right one.
One of the biggest mistakes I see travelers make is comparing golden monkey trekking directly with gorilla trekking. I don’t think that’s the right comparison because they deliver completely different experiences. Gorilla trekking is emotional, intimate, and often quiet. Golden monkey trekking is energetic, playful, and constantly changing as the monkeys move through the forest.
I also encourage travelers to think about their expectations before booking. If your goal is spending an hour observing one family in a peaceful setting, gorilla trekking may be your priority. If you enjoy watching fast-moving wildlife, photographing natural behavior, and walking through beautiful mountain forests, you’ll probably love golden monkey trekking.
Another point that’s often overlooked is the value of combining experiences. Since golden monkey trekking takes place in the same mountain region as gorilla trekking, many travelers find it worthwhile to spend an additional day exploring another fascinating primate species. It creates a more complete understanding of the Virunga ecosystem.
Photography is another important consideration. Golden monkeys move quickly, so I usually recommend bringing a camera with fast autofocus and a reasonably fast shutter speed. Patience also helps because the monkeys rarely stay in one place for long.
Finally, don’t underestimate the value of a knowledgeable guide. I’ve found that experienced guides not only locate the monkeys efficiently but also explain their social behavior, diet, conservation status, and the unique ecology of the bamboo forests. Those insights often make the experience far more meaningful than simply seeing the animals.
Destinations:Â Golden monkey trekking is available in Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park.
Accommodation:Â Choose from comfortable lodges, boutique properties, luxury forest lodges, and eco-friendly accommodations near the trekking areas.
Transportation:Â Scenic road transfers or domestic flights depending on your overall itinerary and available time.
Daily Pace:Â An early morning briefing followed by a guided forest trek that usually lasts a few hours, depending on monkey movements.
Activities:Â Golden monkey trekking, guided forest walks, birdwatching, cultural experiences, and optional gorilla trekking combinations.
Comfort Level:Â Moderate and generally less physically demanding than gorilla trekking, although uneven forest trails should still be expected.
Budget Expectations:Â More affordable than gorilla trekking, making it an excellent addition for travelers seeking another unique primate experience.
Wildlife Opportunities:Â In addition to golden monkeys, you may encounter forest birds, other monkey species, and beautiful mountain vegetation.
Flexibility:Â Easily combined with gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, wildlife safaris, or cultural experiences across Uganda and Rwanda.
Typical Trip Length:Â Most travelers include golden monkey trekking within a 3 to 10-day Uganda or Rwanda safari.
I regularly recommend golden monkey trekking to travelers who want to experience more than one primate species during their visit to East Africa. Since many visitors already travel to the Virunga Mountains for gorilla trekking, adding golden monkey trekking creates a richer and more diverse wildlife experience without requiring extensive additional travel.
I also recommend it to photographers because the monkeys’ playful behavior creates endless opportunities to capture movement, interaction, and personality. While photographing them requires quick reactions, the reward is a collection of lively images that look completely different from traditional safari photography.
Nature lovers and birdwatchers also tend to enjoy this experience because the trek itself is as rewarding as the destination. Walking through bamboo forests, listening to forest birds, and learning about the mountain ecosystem adds another dimension that many travelers don’t expect.
Finally, I think golden monkey trekking is an excellent option for travelers who want a rewarding primate experience but may be concerned about the physical demands or higher permit costs associated with gorilla trekking. It provides exceptional wildlife viewing while remaining accessible to a broader range of visitors.
Although I genuinely enjoy recommending golden monkey trekking, I don’t think it’s the right choice for everyone.
If your lifelong dream is seeing mountain gorillas, I recommend prioritizing gorilla trekking first. If your schedule only allows one primate experience, gorilla trekking usually delivers the more iconic encounter.
Travelers who are primarily interested in seeing large mammals like lions, elephants, giraffes, or leopards may be happier choosing a traditional wildlife safari instead. Golden monkey trekking focuses entirely on forest primates rather than classic savannah game viewing.
If you dislike walking on natural forest trails or expect wildlife to remain stationary for long periods, this experience may not match your expectations. Golden monkeys are extremely active, and following them through the bamboo forest is part of what makes the trek enjoyable.
Likewise, if your itinerary is already very short, I usually recommend concentrating on your highest-priority experience instead of trying to include too many activities. A well-paced itinerary nearly always creates a more satisfying safari than one that feels rushed.
If you’re wondering whether golden monkey trekking deserves a place on your itinerary, my advice is to think about the kind of wildlife experience you’re hoping to have rather than comparing it directly with other activities. This experience isn’t about ticking off another species from a list. It’s about spending time in one of Africa’s most beautiful mountain forests while observing an endangered primate that exists nowhere else on Earth.
I’ve found that travelers who include golden monkey trekking alongside gorilla trekking often come away surprised by how different and equally memorable the two experiences are. One offers quiet moments with gentle giants, while the other is full of energy, movement, and playful interactions. Together, they provide a deeper appreciation of the remarkable biodiversity found in the Virunga Mountains.
If you’re still deciding between Uganda and Rwanda, or wondering how to combine golden monkey trekking with a broader safari, I’d be happy to help you compare the options based on your interests, budget, available time, and travel style. A little planning can make a significant difference to the overall experience.
I invite you to browse my recommended golden monkey trekking tours below and explore the itineraries that best match your goals. Whether you’re planning your first African adventure, adding another primate experience to your journey, or simply looking for something beyond the traditional safari, there’s an itinerary that will suit you.
If you’re still unsure, I’d rather help you choose the right safari than have you book the wrong one. Feel free to get in touch, and I’ll happily point you in the right direction.
From my experience, absolutely—provided you know what to expect. Golden monkey trekking is very different from a traditional safari or gorilla trek because the experience is more active and fast-paced. If you enjoy observing animal behavior, walking through beautiful mountain forests, and seeing a rare species found only in the Virunga Mountains, I think it’s one of East Africa’s most underrated wildlife experiences.
I usually tell travelers that both destinations offer excellent experiences, but the best choice depends on your itinerary. If you’re already planning a Ugandan safari with gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, or Big Five game drives, adding golden monkey trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park makes perfect sense. If you’re visiting Rwanda for a shorter luxury safari or staying near Volcanoes National Park, trekking there is equally rewarding. I recommend choosing the country that best fits your overall travel plans rather than selecting a destination based solely on the monkeys.
I’ve found that most travelers consider golden monkey trekking easier than gorilla trekking. The monkeys usually stay within bamboo forests at lower elevations, and the hikes are often shorter with less challenging terrain. That said, you’ll still be walking on natural forest trails that can become muddy after rain, so a reasonable level of fitness and proper hiking footwear are important.
Your day usually begins with an early morning briefing before heading into the forest with experienced park rangers. The trekking portion can last anywhere from one to several hours, depending on where the monkeys are located. Once you find the troop, you’ll spend a designated period observing and photographing them while learning about their behavior and conservation.
Yes, and I actually encourage many travelers to do exactly that. Although both activities take place in the Virunga Mountains, they provide completely different wildlife experiences. Gorilla trekking is slower, quieter, and deeply emotional, while golden monkey trekking is lively, energetic, and constantly changing. Together, they offer a much richer understanding of the region’s incredible primate diversity.
I think it’s an excellent choice for families with older children who meet the park’s age requirements and enjoy outdoor activities. The shorter and generally easier hikes make it more accessible than some other primate experiences. Watching the monkeys leap through the bamboo and interact with one another is entertaining for both adults and younger travelers, making it a memorable family adventure.
I always recommend wearing lightweight long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, waterproof hiking boots with good grip, and a light rain jacket because mountain weather can change quickly. Gaiters can also be helpful if the trails are muddy. Since the monkeys move quickly, comfortable clothing that allows easy movement will make your trek much more enjoyable.
Absolutely. In fact, I rarely recommend planning golden monkey trekking as a standalone trip unless your time is very limited. I usually suggest combining it with gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, Big Five safaris, cultural experiences, or even a visit to Lake Bunyonyi. A customized itinerary lets you experience several of East Africa’s highlights while minimizing unnecessary travel time.
One of the things I appreciate about golden monkey trekking is that it can be enjoyed throughout the year. The drier months generally provide more comfortable hiking conditions and easier photography because the trails are less muddy. However, the wetter months bring lush green forests and fewer visitors, so I don’t think there’s a single “perfect” season—it depends on your preferences.
I recommend booking as early as possible, especially if you’re combining golden monkey trekking with gorilla trekking. While golden monkey permits are often easier to obtain than gorilla permits, securing everything together early gives you more flexibility with travel dates, accommodation choices, and transportation. Planning ahead also makes it much easier to build a smooth, well-paced itinerary.

Unforgettable safari and tour of Murchison Falls! Apollo took my family and I to a wonderful Safari and tour of Murchison falls. I have also travelled with him by myself before. Apollo is kind, funny and a meticulous planner. He is punctual, has excellent local contacts, and superb knowledge of wildlife and culture. Asking him a question is like consulting an encyclopedia, he always knows! Apollo took us for an unforgettable experience in Murchison falls. He arranged transport, accomodation, dining, and tours at a very fair price. During the safari we were able to tour the park almost alone, and thanks to Apollos knowledge of good spots we got to see many rare animals. I would recommend Apollo and Big Predator Tours to anyone wanting to visit Ugandas parks, not just Murchison falls. You won't regret it!Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Both times we had a wonderfull experience! Apollo is very trustworthy and everything was organized very good. The best part was chimpanzees tracking in Kibale forest. Amazing safari, hikes and more! Apollo is an amazing organiser and guide. We went on two safari's with him. One to Queen Elisabeth Park and one to Murchison falls. Next to the amazing game drives we did in the parks, he also organised chimpansee tracking, a boat safari cruise and a hike up to the Falls. Because of the knowledge of Apollo about the best views, we saw a lot of animals and beautiful nature. Another thing why we booked him the second time is because the accomodation, food, safety and permits were all organised really well, which I think is also really important.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()
