Whenever I help travelers plan an East African itinerary, I often suggest including at least one city tour. Many people focus entirely on wildlife safaris, gorilla trekking, or beach holidays, but I’ve found that spending time in a city’s streets, markets, museums, and neighborhoods gives travelers a much deeper understanding of the country they’re visiting. A city isn’t simply where you arrive or depart it’s where culture, history, daily life, and modern Africa come together.
I usually recommend city tours to travelers who enjoy learning about local traditions, meeting people, trying regional cuisine, and discovering places beyond national parks. They’re an excellent addition before or after a safari because they provide context that makes the rest of the journey even more meaningful. However, if your only goal is spending every day surrounded by wildlife or remote landscapes, a city tour may not need to be a major part of your itinerary.
One misconception I hear regularly is that African cities are only transit points. In reality, cities like Kampala, Kigali, Nairobi, Arusha, and Zanzibar Stone Town each have their own personality, fascinating history, and unique cultural experiences that many visitors overlook.
From my experience, the best city tours are those that balance famous attractions with authentic local experiences. Visiting a museum is worthwhile, but so is exploring a neighborhood market, tasting street food, or talking with local artisans. Those are often the moments travelers remember most.
Browse my recommended tours below, or contact me if you’d like help choosing the right one.
One mistake I frequently see is travelers trying to see an entire city in just a couple of hours. While it’s possible to visit a few highlights, rushing from one attraction to another rarely allows you to appreciate the city’s culture or atmosphere. I generally recommend allowing at least half a day, and preferably a full day, if you genuinely want to experience the destination.
Another common misconception is that all city tours follow the same route. In reality, every city offers something different. Kampala is known for its vibrant markets, religious landmarks, and energetic atmosphere. Kigali stands out for its cleanliness, history, and modern development. Nairobi blends wildlife, museums, and urban culture, while Arusha provides a gateway to Tanzania’s famous safari destinations.
I also encourage travelers to think about their interests before choosing a city tour. Ask yourself whether you enjoy history, architecture, local food, shopping, art, cultural performances, photography, or simply observing daily life. Choosing a tour that matches your interests almost always creates a more enjoyable experience.
If you’re traveling after a long international flight, I often recommend starting with a relaxed city tour before beginning a safari. It gives you time to adjust, recover from travel, and gradually immerse yourself in the local culture instead of immediately beginning long game drives.
Finally, don’t underestimate the value of having a knowledgeable local guide. The buildings and streets are interesting on their own, but understanding the stories behind them transforms a sightseeing trip into a meaningful cultural experience.
Transportation:Â Private vehicle, guided walking tour, or a combination of both depending on the city and itinerary.
Activities:Â Museums, historical landmarks, local markets, cultural centers, art galleries, food tasting, shopping, viewpoints, and neighborhood visits.
Daily Pace:Â Generally relaxed and flexible, with regular stops and opportunities to explore at your own pace.
Comfort Level:Â Suitable for most travelers, with options ranging from leisurely sightseeing to more active walking experiences.
Budget Expectations:Â City tours are usually among the most affordable activities to include in an East African itinerary.
Service Level:Â Professional local guides who provide historical, cultural, and practical insights throughout the experience.
Flexibility:Â Private city tours can easily be customized around your interests, available time, and pace.
Typical Trip Length:Â Most tours last between half a day and a full day, although multi-day cultural experiences are also available.
Accommodation:Â Not normally included, making city tours easy to combine with your existing hotel or safari itinerary.
Wildlife Opportunities: While wildlife isn’t the main focus, some cities—such as Nairobi—offer opportunities to visit wildlife conservation centers or nearby national parks.
I often recommend city tours to first-time visitors because they provide valuable context before exploring national parks or rural destinations. Understanding the country’s history, people, and culture makes the rest of the journey far more meaningful.
I also recommend them to travelers who enjoy authentic cultural experiences rather than simply visiting famous landmarks. Exploring local markets, tasting regional dishes, meeting artisans, and learning about everyday life often creates memories that are just as rewarding as wildlife sightings.
Couples frequently enjoy city tours because they offer a slower pace than a safari while providing opportunities to discover cafés, restaurants, museums, and scenic viewpoints together. It’s an excellent way to balance adventure with relaxation.
Families also benefit because city tours can easily be adapted to different ages and interests. Children often enjoy interactive museums, colorful markets, and local food experiences, while adults appreciate learning more about the destination beyond its wildlife.
Finally, I recommend city tours to travelers with limited time. If you only have a day or two before or after your safari, a well-planned city tour allows you to experience another side of East Africa without requiring extensive travel.
If your primary reason for visiting East Africa is wildlife, I would probably recommend spending more time in national parks rather than cities. Every extra day on safari increases your opportunities for memorable wildlife encounters.
Travelers looking for complete relaxation may also prefer extending their stay at a beach destination or luxury safari lodge instead of spending time exploring an urban environment.
If you’re interested mainly in adventure activities like mountain climbing, white-water rafting, or gorilla trekking, a city tour may be better as a short addition rather than the centerpiece of your itinerary.
Likewise, if you’ve visited the same city several times before, I may recommend exploring nearby cultural villages, nature reserves, or lesser-known attractions instead of repeating the standard sightseeing route. Tailoring the experience to your previous travels usually creates a more rewarding journey.
Whenever I help someone plan an East African journey, I remind them that a destination is more than its wildlife. The cities tell the story of the people, cultures, traditions, and history that shape the countries you’ll explore. Spending time in a city often provides context that makes every safari, cultural visit, or nature experience even more meaningful.
I’ve found that the best city tours are those designed around your interests rather than a standard sightseeing checklist. Whether you enjoy history, food, architecture, photography, local markets, or simply meeting people, a thoughtfully planned itinerary creates a far more memorable experience than trying to visit every landmark in a single day.
I encourage you to browse my recommended city tours below and compare the different experiences available across East Africa. Whether you’re visiting Kampala, Kigali, Nairobi, Arusha, or another destination, I can help you choose a tour that fits your schedule, interests, and travel style.
If you’re planning a longer itinerary, I also recommend combining a city tour with a safari, gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, or a beach holiday. The combination offers a well-rounded journey that showcases both the natural beauty and the vibrant cultures of East Africa.
If you’re still unsure, I’d rather help you choose the right experience than have you book the wrong one. Feel free to get in touch, and I’ll happily point you in the right direction.
In most cases, I believe it is. A city tour helps you understand the people, culture, history, and daily life behind the destinations you’ll visit on safari. I’ve found that travelers who spend even half a day exploring a city often leave with a much richer appreciation of the country than those who only visit national parks. It’s an excellent way to add depth to your journey.
I usually recommend a city tour before your safari if you’ve just arrived from a long international flight. It gives you time to adjust to the local time zone, recover from travel, and ease into your adventure. If you’d rather relax after several days of game drives, a city tour at the end of your trip is equally enjoyable. The best timing depends on your itinerary and travel pace.
That depends on what interests you most. I often recommend Kampala for its vibrant culture, local markets, and historical landmarks, Kigali for its cleanliness, modern atmosphere, and important history, Nairobi for its blend of wildlife attractions and urban experiences, and Arusha for travelers beginning or ending a Tanzania safari. Each city offers something unique, so I always match the destination to your interests rather than recommending one as universally better.
Most city tours involve a moderate amount of walking, but they’re generally suitable for travelers with average mobility. Many attractions are reached by vehicle, with walking taking place at markets, museums, cultural sites, and historical areas. If you prefer less walking, I recommend a private tour that can be adjusted to your comfort level. Flexibility is one of the biggest advantages of a customized itinerary.
Yes, especially when the itinerary is designed around your family’s interests. I’ve helped many families enjoy visits to museums, craft markets, cultural centers, parks, and local restaurants without feeling rushed. Children often enjoy seeing everyday life in a different country, while adults appreciate learning about local history and traditions. A private guide also makes it easier to adjust the pace whenever needed.
Absolutely. In fact, I encourage it whenever possible. Some travelers are interested in history, while others want local food, shopping, photography, architecture, or cultural experiences. By tailoring the itinerary to your interests, I can help you spend more time doing what you’ll genuinely enjoy rather than following a fixed schedule that may include places that don’t interest you.
Yes, provided your expectations are realistic. A single day is enough to experience many of the city’s highlights, visit several important attractions, and gain a meaningful introduction to the destination. I recommend focusing on quality rather than trying to see everything. It’s much more enjoyable to explore a few places properly than to rush through a long checklist.
Compared with multi-day safaris, city tours are generally one of the most affordable experiences you can include in your trip. The overall cost depends on whether you choose a private guide, transportation, entrance fees, and optional activities. I usually recommend investing in a knowledgeable guide because the stories and local insights they provide add far more value than simply visiting attractions on your own.
I highly recommend doing so. A city tour complements a safari beautifully because it introduces you to the country’s people, culture, and history before or after your wildlife experience. Many of my favorite itineraries combine both, allowing travelers to enjoy the best of urban culture and Africa’s incredible natural landscapes in one seamless journey.
While city tours are generally easier to arrange than safari permits or lodge reservations, I still recommend booking in advance, especially if you’re traveling during peak tourist seasons or want a private guide. Early planning gives you greater flexibility and allows the tour to fit perfectly into your overall itinerary. It also ensures that any special interests or requests can be included.

Unforgettable safari and tour of Murchison Falls! Apollo took my family and I to a wonderful Safari and tour of Murchison falls. I have also travelled with him by myself before. Apollo is kind, funny and a meticulous planner. He is punctual, has excellent local contacts, and superb knowledge of wildlife and culture. Asking him a question is like consulting an encyclopedia, he always knows! Apollo took us for an unforgettable experience in Murchison falls. He arranged transport, accomodation, dining, and tours at a very fair price. During the safari we were able to tour the park almost alone, and thanks to Apollos knowledge of good spots we got to see many rare animals. I would recommend Apollo and Big Predator Tours to anyone wanting to visit Ugandas parks, not just Murchison falls. You won't regret it!Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Both times we had a wonderfull experience! Apollo is very trustworthy and everything was organized very good. The best part was chimpanzees tracking in Kibale forest. Amazing safari, hikes and more! Apollo is an amazing organiser and guide. We went on two safari's with him. One to Queen Elisabeth Park and one to Murchison falls. Next to the amazing game drives we did in the parks, he also organised chimpansee tracking, a boat safari cruise and a hike up to the Falls. Because of the knowledge of Apollo about the best views, we saw a lot of animals and beautiful nature. Another thing why we booked him the second time is because the accomodation, food, safety and permits were all organised really well, which I think is also really important.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()
