If you’re considering an adventure safari, I think it’s important to first understand what that really means. Over the years, I’ve learned that adventure travel isn’t simply about choosing the most physically demanding itinerary. It’s about seeking experiences that take you beyond the ordinary whether that’s trekking to see mountain gorillas, climbing volcanic peaks, hiking through rainforests, kayaking on remote lakes, walking with experienced guides, or exploring wildlife areas that many travelers never reach.
I usually recommend adventure safaris to travelers who enjoy being active, curious, and open to unexpected moments. If you love discovering new landscapes, experiencing different cultures, and earning your memories rather than simply observing them, you’ll probably enjoy this style of travel. On the other hand, if your priority is relaxing by the pool every afternoon or minimizing physical activity, another safari style may suit you better.
One misconception I often hear is that adventure travel means sacrificing comfort. In my experience, that’s rarely true. Many adventure safaris combine exciting outdoor experiences with excellent lodges, comfortable camps, and quality service.
My advice is to choose adventures that genuinely match your fitness, interests, and expectations rather than trying to fit everything into one itinerary. The best adventure isn’t necessarily the hardest it’s the one you’ll enjoy the most.
Browse my recommended tours below, or contact me if you’d like help choosing the right one.
One of the biggest mistakes I see travelers make is assuming every adventure safari requires exceptional fitness. While some experiences, such as mountain climbing, are physically demanding, many adventures—including gorilla trekking, guided nature walks, canoe safaris, and chimpanzee tracking—are achievable for travelers with average fitness.
I also encourage travelers to think about the type of adventure they truly enjoy. Ask yourself whether you prefer wildlife encounters, hiking, cultural experiences, water-based activities, or a combination of several experiences. The answer will help determine which destinations are the best fit.
Don’t underestimate how weather, altitude, and terrain can influence your trip. A rainforest trek feels very different from a game drive across open savannah, and climbing Mount Kenya is a completely different experience from tracking chimpanzees in Kibale Forest.
Finally, avoid filling every day with strenuous activities. I’ve found that combining adventure with slower wildlife experiences creates a more enjoyable and memorable safari overall.
Active itineraries that combine wildlife, nature, and outdoor exploration.
Comfortable lodges or tented camps located close to key adventure areas.
Professional guides trained for wildlife viewing and specialized activities.
Activities such as gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, hiking, canoeing, boat safaris, walking safaris, and cultural experiences.
Moderate to challenging daily activity depending on your chosen itinerary.
Flexible itineraries that can be customized around your interests and fitness level.
Excellent opportunities for wildlife photography and unique landscapes.
Trip durations typically ranging from 5 to 14 days, although longer expeditions are available.
Budgets that vary widely depending on permits, accommodations, and destinations.
Small-group or private safaris, with private trips offering the greatest flexibility.
I usually recommend adventure safaris to travelers who enjoy experiences that are active, immersive, and rewarding. If you prefer discovering wildlife on foot, hiking through forests, exploring remote parks, or combining several different activities into one journey, you’ll likely appreciate this style of safari.
Adventure safaris are also an excellent choice for photographers, couples looking for memorable experiences, solo travelers seeking personal challenges, and repeat visitors who want something beyond traditional game drives.
I’ve also found that many first-time visitors enjoy adventure safaris when they’re balanced with classic wildlife viewing. Combining gorilla trekking with Big Five safaris or adding a walking safari to your itinerary often creates a more complete East African experience.
Adventure travel isn’t the perfect choice for everyone, and I think it’s important to be honest about that.
If you’re mainly looking for relaxation, luxury spa experiences, short daily activities, or leisurely game drives, a classic luxury safari may be a better fit. Likewise, travelers with limited mobility or those who prefer predictable schedules may find some adventure activities physically demanding or less comfortable.
If your priority is seeing as many animals as possible from a safari vehicle with minimal walking, I’d usually recommend a traditional wildlife safari instead of an adventure-focused itinerary.
Whenever I help someone plan an adventure safari, I remind them that the goal isn’t to complete the longest itinerary or the most difficult trek. The goal is to return home with experiences that genuinely excite and inspire you.
I’ve found that the best adventure safaris combine challenge with comfort, wildlife with culture, and active exploration with time to appreciate the incredible landscapes around you. When those elements are balanced well, your safari becomes far more meaningful than simply checking destinations off a list.
I encourage you to browse my recommended adventure safari tours throughout Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, and the rest of East Africa. Each itinerary offers a different way to experience the region, and I’d be happy to help you choose one that matches your interests, fitness level, and travel goals.
If you’re still unsure, I’d rather help you choose the right safari than have you book the wrong one. Feel free to get in touch, and I’ll happily point you in the right direction.
I think the biggest difference is how you experience the destination. Traditional safaris focus mainly on wildlife viewing from vehicles, while adventure safaris combine game drives with activities such as trekking, hiking, canoeing, walking safaris, or cultural encounters. If you enjoy participating rather than simply observing, adventure travel is often a better fit.
Not necessarily. I’ve planned many adventure safaris for travelers with average fitness who successfully completed gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, and guided nature walks. The important thing is choosing activities that match your comfort level and physical abilities.
I usually recommend Uganda and Rwanda for primate trekking, Kenya and Tanzania for hiking, walking safaris, and diverse landscapes, and combinations of several countries for travelers seeking varied experiences. The best destination depends on the type of adventure you’re looking for rather than the country itself.
Yes. Many travelers are surprised by how comfortable adventure safaris can be. While your days may include active experiences, your evenings are often spent in well-appointed lodges or quality tented camps with excellent food and hospitality.
Absolutely. In fact, I recommend doing exactly that whenever possible. Combining activities such as gorilla trekking or hiking with traditional game drives creates a more balanced itinerary and allows you to experience different sides of East Africa.
Some are, and some aren’t. I usually recommend selecting activities based on the ages and interests of everyone traveling. Canoe trips, nature walks, cultural visits, and shorter hikes can work very well for families, while more demanding treks may be better suited to older children and adults.
Costs vary depending on your destinations, accommodations, permits, and activities. Gorilla trekking, for example, requires permits that significantly increase the overall price, while hiking or canoe safaris may be more affordable. I always recommend planning your itinerary around the experiences that matter most to you.
Yes, and I usually encourage travelers to do so. Every traveler has different interests, fitness levels, and available time. Customizing your itinerary allows me to create a journey that feels exciting without becoming exhausting.
I generally recommend booking six to twelve months ahead if your itinerary includes permit-based activities such as gorilla trekking. Early booking provides better accommodation choices and ensures availability during popular travel seasons.
I usually ask one simple question: do you enjoy experiences that challenge you in rewarding ways? If exploring rainforests, hiking scenic trails, encountering wildlife up close, and discovering places beyond the usual tourist routes sounds exciting, then an adventure safari is probably an excellent choice for you.

Unforgettable safari and tour of Murchison Falls! Apollo took my family and I to a wonderful Safari and tour of Murchison falls. I have also travelled with him by myself before. Apollo is kind, funny and a meticulous planner. He is punctual, has excellent local contacts, and superb knowledge of wildlife and culture. Asking him a question is like consulting an encyclopedia, he always knows! Apollo took us for an unforgettable experience in Murchison falls. He arranged transport, accomodation, dining, and tours at a very fair price. During the safari we were able to tour the park almost alone, and thanks to Apollos knowledge of good spots we got to see many rare animals. I would recommend Apollo and Big Predator Tours to anyone wanting to visit Ugandas parks, not just Murchison falls. You won't regret it!Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Very good!! When we were in Uganda, we went for two weekends with Apollo on safari. We saw queen Elizabeth national park, Kibale forest, Murchison falls and ziwa Rhino sanctuary. Both times we had a wonderfull experience! Apollo is very trustworthy and everything was organized very good. The best part was chimpanzees tracking in Kibale forest. We also saw lions, elephants, giraffe, rhino's and lots of other animals.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Amazing safari, hikes and more! Apollo is an amazing organiser and guide. We went on two safari's with him. One to Queen Elisabeth Park and one to Murchison falls. Next to the amazing game drives we did in the parks, he also organised chimpansee tracking, a boat safari cruise and a hike up to the Falls. Because of the knowledge of Apollo about the best views, we saw a lot of animals and beautiful nature. Another thing why we booked him the second time is because the accomodation, food, safety and permits were all organised really well, which I think is also really important.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Apollo was also friendly enough to set us up completely with a tour and guide for the next day in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Our experience wouldn't have been the same without him!Posted on Tripadvisor![]()
