Founder & Lead Guide, Big Predators Tours
Over 20 years guiding safari adventures across Uganda, & Rwanda

Important to Know

When I use the term Land & Adventure Experiences, I mean journeys that allow me to take you beyond the traditional safari vehicle and experience East Africa more actively. Depending on the destination and your interests, that can mean hiking through forests and mountains, cycling through rural landscapes, trekking, walking, climbing, canoeing, kayaking or combining several outdoor activities with wildlife and cultural experiences.

I’ve found that this style of travel suits people who want to participate rather than simply observe. It can be particularly rewarding for active couples, solo travelers, families with older children, adventure travelers, photographers and repeat visitors who want to experience East Africa differently. Current adventure-travel demand also continues to favor hiking, walking, trekking, cycling, cultural connection and off-the-beaten-path experiences.

I also want to correct a common misconception: adventure does not automatically mean extreme physical effort. I can recommend relatively gentle walks, cycling routes and nature experiences just as easily as challenging mountain or multi-day trekking adventures.

My advice is to choose the activity according to your fitness, interests and available time—not simply because it sounds exciting. Rwanda, for example, has hiking, cycling and kayaking options across different landscapes and difficulty levels, while East Africa more broadly gives me plenty of ways to combine active experiences with wildlife and culture.

My Advice Before You Choose

My first piece of advice is not to choose an adventure based only on the name of the activity. “Hiking,” “trekking” or “cycling” can mean very different things depending on the terrain, elevation, distance, weather and pace. I always want to understand what you are physically comfortable doing before I recommend an experience.

I’ve also found that travelers sometimes underestimate how much time an active experience takes. A short-looking route can become a full-day activity once I include transfers, preparation, breaks and changing conditions. I would rather build enough time into your itinerary than make you rush through an experience simply to reach the next destination.

Before I recommend an adventure, I would ask myself:

  • How active do I genuinely want my trip to be?
  • Am I comfortable walking or cycling for several hours?
  • How do I feel about steep climbs, uneven trails or high-altitude environments?
  • Do I want a physical challenge or simply a different way to see the landscape?
  • Would I rather hike, cycle, paddle or combine several activities?
  • How much recovery time do I need between active days?
  • Am I traveling with people whose fitness levels are different from mine?
  • What happens if weather conditions change?
  • Do I want adventure to be the main purpose of my trip or an addition to a safari?
  • Would I enjoy combining an active experience with local communities, wildlife or scenery?

I also recommend being honest about fitness rather than trying to prove something to yourself on holiday. There is nothing wrong with choosing an easier route. In fact, I often find that the best itinerary is the one that leaves you energized enough to enjoy everything that comes after the activity.

Finally, I advise against packing too many demanding activities into one itinerary. If I combine trekking, long cycling days and early-morning wildlife activities without enough recovery time, the trip can quickly become tiring rather than enjoyable. I prefer to create a rhythm where the adventure adds energy to your journey instead of consuming it.

What You Can Expect

  • Hiking and trekking: I can include anything from relatively easy nature walks to more demanding mountain and forest treks, depending on your fitness and destination.
  • Cycling and mountain biking: I can recommend cycling where the terrain and route provide a worthwhile way to see rural landscapes, communities and scenery.
  • Walking experiences: Where appropriate, I can take you away from the safari vehicle and let you experience landscapes at a much slower pace.
  • Water-based adventure: Depending on the destination, I can incorporate kayaking, canoeing or other suitable water activities.
  • Mountain and volcanic landscapes: Rwanda and parts of Uganda and Tanzania offer opportunities for active exploration around dramatic highland and volcanic environments.
  • Wildlife combined with adventure: I can combine active experiences with game drives, primate encounters, cultural visits and other safari activities.
  • Different difficulty levels: I don’t assume every traveler wants an extreme challenge. I can help match the activity to your actual fitness and confidence.
  • Flexible pacing: I recommend allowing adequate time for rest, meals, transfers and unexpected changes rather than scheduling every hour tightly.
  • Local interaction: Some cycling, hiking and walking experiences can bring you closer to rural communities and landscapes that are easy to miss from a vehicle. Rwanda’s official tourism information specifically highlights cycling as a way to interact with rural communities and experience the countryside.
  • Scenic exploration: I often recommend active experiences when the landscape itself is a major reason to travel, particularly around mountains, forests, lakes and highlands.
  • Customized itineraries: I can adjust the amount and intensity of adventure around your wider safari, age, fitness, interests and travel schedule.
  • Typical trip length: I can include a single half-day or full-day adventure within a safari, or build a longer itinerary around trekking, cycling or other active experiences.

Who I Recommend This For

Travelers Who Want to Be Active

I particularly recommend Land & Adventure Experiences if you don’t want your entire trip to be spent sitting in a vehicle. If the idea of walking through a forest, cycling through countryside or climbing toward a viewpoint excites you, I can build the itinerary around that preference.

Repeat Safari Travelers

If you’ve already experienced the classic game-drive safari, I think adventure can give you a completely different perspective on East Africa. Instead of simply returning to see more wildlife, I can introduce you to landscapes, trails, communities and activities that change the pace of the journey.

Couples and Friends

I often recommend active experiences to couples and groups of friends because shared physical challenges create a very different kind of travel memory. I can also balance demanding activities with comfortable accommodation and slower days so the entire trip doesn’t become exhausting.

Adventure Travelers

If you actively seek hiking, trekking, cycling, climbing or water-based activities when you travel, this category gives me much more flexibility than a conventional safari itinerary. I can make the activity itself a central part of the journey rather than treating it as an optional extra.

Travelers Who Want to See East Africa Differently

I recommend this style of travel to people who want to get away from the standard tourist route. Rwanda, for example, officially promotes hiking, cycling, kayaking and other outdoor activities, with routes ranging from easier walks to demanding hikes.

Travelers Interested in Slower, More Immersive Travel

I also recommend active experiences to travelers who want to move more slowly through a destination. Current adventure travel is increasingly shaped by interest in meaningful experiences, cultural connection and less conventional exploration rather than simply collecting destinations.

Who May Prefer Something Else

I wouldn’t recommend a heavily adventure-focused itinerary if your main priority is comfort, relaxation and minimal physical exertion. You can certainly enjoy East Africa without hiking, cycling or trekking, and I would rather recommend a comfortable safari than push you toward activities you won’t enjoy.

I would also be cautious about combining several physically demanding activities if you’re not accustomed to regular exercise. Long drives, early starts, altitude, heat and active excursions can add up quickly. In that situation, I would normally recommend one or two carefully selected adventure experiences rather than making every day physically demanding.

Travelers with significantly different fitness levels within the same group should also think carefully about the itinerary. I can often design alternatives or different activity levels, but I need to know this in advance so one person’s adventure doesn’t become another person’s difficult day.

Finally, if your main goal is maximizing wildlife sightings, I may recommend keeping Land & Adventure Experiences as an addition to a traditional safari. A hiking or cycling day can be excellent, but I wouldn’t sacrifice several prime wildlife-viewing opportunities unless active travel is genuinely your priority.

Final Guidance

I see Land & Adventure Experiences as a way of changing the relationship you have with the destination. A safari vehicle gives you access to incredible wildlife, but walking, cycling, trekking or paddling can make you notice the terrain, sounds, people and small details that you might otherwise pass by.

I also don’t believe that a good adventure has to be extreme. Some of the experiences I would recommend most strongly are relatively simple because they fit naturally into the journey. Rwanda, for example, combines hiking, cycling and kayaking with dramatic scenery, while its Congo Nile Trail demonstrates how an active itinerary can become a multi-day journey through landscapes and local communities.

My biggest recommendation is to be honest about what you want from the experience. If you want a challenge, I’ll help you find one; if you simply want to walk through a beautiful forest or cycle through countryside for a few hours, I don’t think you need to turn the trip into an endurance test.

I can also combine Land & Adventure Experiences with a classic safari. That approach works particularly well when you want wildlife, scenery, culture and physical activity in the same trip without sacrificing comfort or spending every day on the move.

If you’re still unsure, I’d rather help you choose the right adventure than have you book an itinerary that is too demanding, too slow or simply not suited to you. Feel free to get in touch, and I’ll happily point you in the right direction.

FAQs

When I use this term, I mean active experiences that let me explore East Africa through movement and participation rather than only from a safari vehicle. Depending on the destination, I can include hiking, trekking, cycling, mountain biking, walking, climbing, kayaking, canoeing and other suitable outdoor activities. I can also combine these experiences with wildlife and cultural activities.

No, and I think this is one of the biggest misconceptions about adventure travel. I can recommend easier walks, shorter cycling routes and gentle outdoor experiences for travelers who simply want to be more active. What matters most to me is matching the experience to your actual fitness rather than choosing an activity because it sounds impressive.

The cost depends heavily on the activity, location, guides, equipment, permits, accommodation and transportation involved. A simple nature walk may require very little additional planning, while a multi-day mountain trek can involve specialized logistics and additional services. I recommend looking at the total experience rather than comparing the activity price alone.

I don’t consider every adventure experience to be physically demanding. Some are relaxed walks or scenic cycling experiences, while others involve steep terrain, long distances or significant elevation changes. Before I recommend anything, I want to understand your fitness, previous experience and how much challenge you actually want.

I usually choose accommodation based on where the activity is taking place and how well it supports the itinerary. For a demanding trek, being close to the trail or starting point can be more important than having the most luxurious property. For a mixed safari and adventure trip, I may deliberately use comfortable lodges or camps between active days so you have time to recover.

I normally combine private road transfers or safari vehicles with the appropriate activity-based transport. Cycling and hiking experiences may begin directly from accommodation or require a transfer to a trailhead, while kayaking and canoeing depend on the relevant water location. I plan the transportation around the activity so that unnecessary driving doesn’t take away from the experience.

Yes, and I actually recommend doing this rather than choosing a fixed itinerary without discussing your preferences. I can adjust the number of active days, route difficulty, activity duration and amount of recovery time where the destination and logistics allow it. I can also balance demanding experiences with wildlife viewing, cultural activities and more comfortable days.

I would base that decision on what you want to remember most about the trip. If wildlife is your main priority, I would make a traditional safari the foundation and add selected adventures; if physical activity and exploration are your main interests, I can build the itinerary around hiking, cycling, trekking or similar experiences. A combination is often the best choice for first-time visitors who want both.

I recommend planning adventure activities at the same time as the rest of your safari, particularly when permits, specialist guides, equipment or limited-capacity activities are involved. This also gives me the opportunity to arrange the itinerary around your fitness and preferred pace. I don’t like adding demanding activities at the last minute because they need to fit properly with transportation, accommodation and recovery time.

I would start with the type of experience you want rather than the activity name. If you want scenery and a slower pace, I may recommend hiking; if you want to cover more countryside, cycling may suit you better; if you want a genuine physical challenge, trekking or mountain activities may be more appropriate. I can compare the options with you based on your fitness, interests, destination and the rest of your safari.

Unforgettable safari and tour of Murchison Falls! Apollo took my family and I to a wonderful Safari and tour of Murchison falls. I have also travelled with him by myself before. Apollo is kind, funny and a meticulous planner. He is punctual, has excellent local contacts, and superb knowledge of wildlife and culture. Asking him a question is like consulting an encyclopedia, he always knows! Apollo took us for an unforgettable experience in Murchison falls. He arranged transport, accomodation, dining, and tours at a very fair price. During the safari we were able to tour the park almost alone, and thanks to Apollos knowledge of good spots we got to see many rare animals. I would recommend Apollo and Big Predator Tours to anyone wanting to visit Ugandas parks, not just Murchison falls. You won't regret it!

Very good!! When we were in Uganda, we went for two weekends with Apollo on safari. We saw queen Elizabeth national park, Kibale forest, Murchison falls and ziwa Rhino sanctuary. Both times we had a wonderfull experience! Apollo is very trustworthy and everything was organized very good. The best part was chimpanzees tracking in Kibale forest. We also saw lions, elephants, giraffe, rhino's and lots of other animals.

Amazing safari, hikes and more! Apollo is an amazing organiser and guide. We went on two safari's with him. One to Queen Elisabeth Park and one to Murchison falls. Next to the amazing game drives we did in the parks, he also organised chimpansee tracking, a boat safari cruise and a hike up to the Falls. Because of the knowledge of Apollo about the best views, we saw a lot of animals and beautiful nature. Another thing why we booked him the second time is because the accomodation, food, safety and permits were all organised really well, which I think is also really important.

Game changer! We had an amazing time! Apollo is very knowledgeable about the wildlife and surroundings and is very enthusiastic all round, he gave us a tour specific to our needs. Apollo was also friendly enough to set us up completely with a tour and guide for the next day in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Our experience wouldn't have been the same without him!
