Important to Know

I’ve found that a small group safari can be one of the smartest ways to experience East Africa when you want a professionally organized trip without paying the full cost of a private safari.

When I talk about small group and scheduled departure safaris, I mean trips where I bring travelers together around a predetermined itinerary, departure date, accommodation plan and shared safari vehicle. The biggest advantage is straightforward: I can spread some of the vehicle, guide and operational costs across several travelers, which can make a safari considerably more accessible than arranging everything privately. Current safari choices also show that small groups commonly remain within roughly one vehicle, with many operators targeting around six to eight guests for comfort and manageable logistics.

I usually recommend this style to solo travelers, couples and friends who are comfortable sharing their safari experience with other people. I also recommend it to travelers who value a clear itinerary and predictable departure dates more than having complete control over every morning and game drive.

What I would not recommend is booking a scheduled departure simply because it is cheaper. You are exchanging some privacy and flexibility for the lower per-person cost, and I think you should understand that trade-off before paying.

Browse my recommended tours below, or contact me if you’d like help choosing the right one.

Table of Contents

The first mistake I see travelers make is treating small group safari and private safari as though they are essentially the same experience. They are not. With a scheduled departure, I have to plan around the agreed itinerary and the needs of the group, so you should be comfortable making some decisions collectively rather than individually.

The second mistake is looking only at the advertised price. I always advise travelers to ask what the price actually includes, how many people will share the vehicle, what type of vehicle will be used, whether the departure is guaranteed, which accommodations are included and whether there are additional costs for park fees, activities, transfers or single rooms.

I would also pay close attention to group size. A small group should feel genuinely small; once too many people are packed into one vehicle, the savings can come at the expense of comfort, photography space and the quality of conversations with your guide. Current safari operators commonly cap small-group vehicles at around six to eight travelers, although exact limits vary.

Before I recommend a scheduled departure, I want you to ask yourself three questions:

  • Am I comfortable sharing a vehicle with people I don’t know?
  • Am I happy to follow a planned itinerary rather than changing it whenever I want?
  • Is saving money or meeting other travelers important enough to me to accept less privacy?

If the answer to all three is yes, I would seriously consider a small group departure.

I also recommend checking the departure date carefully. A scheduled safari only works if the dates fit your international flights, accommodation before and after the safari, and any other activities you have planned. I would rather see you choose a slightly more expensive private departure than force your entire trip around a date that does not work.

What You Can Expect

  • Shared safari vehicle: I normally expect you to share the safari vehicle and game drives with other travelers on a scheduled departure. This shared arrangement is one of the main reasons the per-person cost can be lower than a private safari.
  • Small-group atmosphere: I recommend asking for the exact maximum number of travelers rather than accepting the phrase “small group” at face value. A group that fits comfortably into one safari vehicle is generally easier to manage and more personal than a much larger tour.
  • Fixed departure dates: I will build the experience around predetermined departure dates. That makes planning easier, but it also means you sacrifice some flexibility compared with a private safari.
  • Planned itinerary: I expect you to follow the agreed route, accommodation schedule and major activities. I can sometimes make practical adjustments, but I would not promise the same freedom I would give you on a private safari.
  • Wildlife viewing: I still expect excellent wildlife opportunities when the itinerary and destination are well chosen. The difference is that I cannot guarantee that every sighting will be extended specifically around your personal interests because other travelers are sharing the vehicle.
  • Accommodation: I can use lodges, tented camps, camps or hotels depending on the particular itinerary and budget. I recommend checking the individual tour rather than assuming every scheduled departure uses the same accommodation standard.
  • Daily pace: I expect a reasonably structured day. Early starts, long game drives and road transfers can be part of the experience, particularly when I am connecting several parks or reserves.
  • Social experience: I see this as one of the genuine advantages. You may share meals, wildlife sightings, photographs and conversations with travelers from different countries, which can be particularly enjoyable for solo travelers.
  • Budget: I usually recommend this format when controlling the per-person cost matters. Shared vehicle and guiding costs can make group travel less expensive than a comparable private safari.
  • Booking conditions: I advise checking whether your particular departure is guaranteed, whether a minimum number of participants is required and what happens if the departure does not operate.

Who I Recommend This For

Solo Travelers

I particularly like scheduled departures for solo travelers who want to explore East Africa without paying the full cost of a private vehicle. You also have an opportunity to meet other travelers rather than spending the entire safari alone with a guide.

Couples Watching Their Budget

I recommend this option to couples who would rather spend their money on the destination, accommodation or length of the safari than on having an exclusive vehicle. The compromise is that your game drives are shared and your itinerary is less flexible.

First-Time Safari Travelers

I can recommend a small group safari to someone visiting Africa for the first time who wants the logistics handled rather than having to organize transport, accommodation and park visits independently. The structure can make the first safari easier to understand and less intimidating.

Travelers Who Enjoy Social Travel

If you naturally enjoy meeting people while traveling, I think the shared aspect can add genuine value. Some travelers remember the conversations and friendships from their group just as much as the wildlife sightings.

Travelers With Fixed Vacation Dates

I find scheduled departures particularly useful when your travel window is already known and one of the available departures fits it. Instead of designing an entire safari from scratch, you can choose an established route and focus on whether the experience suits you.

Who May Prefer Something Else

I would steer you toward a private safari if you want complete control over your daily schedule. If you want to spend an extra hour with a leopard, leave camp later, return early because you are tired, change a destination or prioritize photography over the group’s general itinerary, I would not put you on a scheduled departure.

I would also suggest another option if you strongly value privacy. Sharing a vehicle means you will inevitably have different personalities, interests, energy levels and expectations around you.

Families with very young children may also need more careful consideration. A long game drive that works beautifully for an enthusiastic adult traveler may be much harder for a young child, and in a shared vehicle I cannot simply change the day’s plan around one family’s needs.

Finally, I would not recommend this style to someone who dislikes uncertainty around fellow travelers. You can choose the itinerary, accommodation level and departure date, but you cannot choose the personalities of everyone joining you.

I’ve found that the biggest advantage of a small group safari is not simply the price. It is the balance between having someone else handle the complicated logistics and avoiding the full cost of a private safari. For the right traveler, that can be a very sensible way to experience Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and other East African destinations.

At the same time, I don’t want you to choose a group departure simply because the headline price looks attractive. If you know that you want flexibility, privacy or the freedom to shape every game drive around your own interests, I would rather tell you that a private safari is likely to suit you better.

If you are traveling alone or as a couple and want to meet other people, I think a well-designed small group departure can be particularly rewarding. I would focus on the maximum group size, vehicle type, itinerary, accommodation, inclusions and departure guarantee before making the final decision.

I encourage you to browse my recommended tours below and compare the actual itineraries rather than comparing prices alone. If you already know your preferred dates, destination and budget, I can also help you narrow the choices down to the options that genuinely make sense.

FAQs

When I describe a small group and scheduled departure safari, I mean that I place travelers together on a predetermined trip rather than creating an entirely private departure for one party. I normally work around fixed dates, a planned itinerary and a shared safari vehicle. I recommend this format when you want professional safari logistics without necessarily paying for an exclusive vehicle.

Yes, if you book a genuine joining or scheduled group departure, I expect you to share the safari vehicle with other travelers. I think this is important to understand before booking because your fellow travelers will influence the pace of some game drives and shared decisions. I recommend asking for the maximum number of guests per vehicle before you confirm your place.

I generally expect a small group safari to cost less per person because travelers share expenses such as the safari vehicle and guiding. The actual difference depends on the destination, accommodation, duration, season, park fees and group size. I would compare the complete inclusions rather than choosing purely on the lowest advertised price.

I think comfort depends heavily on the vehicle and the number of travelers sharing it. I would rather put a smaller number of people into a suitable 4×4 than maximize every available seat just to reduce the price. Before booking, I recommend asking about seating, window access, luggage space and the maximum occupancy.

I usually recommend it to solo travelers, couples and independent travelers who want an organized safari at a more accessible per-person price. It also suits people who enjoy meeting fellow travelers and are comfortable following a predetermined itinerary. I would choose a private safari instead if personal control is more important than saving money.

I would not assume that “small group” automatically means budget accommodation. I can structure group departures around different accommodation standards, depending on the specific tour and destination. I recommend judging the actual lodges, camps and room arrangements listed for the safari rather than judging the entire trip from its group format.

I can sometimes accommodate practical requests, but I would not promise the same level of customization that I provide on a private safari. The main itinerary, dates and group arrangements are established in advance. If you have particular wildlife interests, dietary needs, mobility considerations or accommodation preferences, I recommend telling me before booking so I can confirm what is possible.

I recommend booking as soon as your travel dates are reasonably certain, particularly if you need a specific departure or are traveling during a popular season. Some scheduled departures operate on set dates and have limited spaces, while others may run more frequently. I would also leave enough time to coordinate your international flights and any pre- or post-safari arrangements.

I would choose a small group safari if keeping the per-person cost down and meeting other travelers are important to me. I would choose private travel if I want control over departure times, game-drive duration, photography priorities, route changes and the people in my vehicle. In my view, neither is automatically better; the right choice depends on which trade-off matters more to you.

Yes, I can recommend one for a first-time traveler if you are comfortable sharing the experience and following a set itinerary. I find the structure useful because I can arrange the major logistics while you concentrate on experiencing the destination. If this is your first safari and you are unsure about the right route, I would still rather help you choose between a scheduled and private option before you book.

Unforgettable safari and tour of Murchison Falls! Apollo took my family and I to a wonderful Safari and tour of Murchison falls. I have also travelled with him by myself before. Apollo is kind, funny and a meticulous planner. He is punctual, has excellent local contacts, and superb knowledge of wildlife and culture. Asking him a question is like consulting an encyclopedia, he always knows! Apollo took us for an unforgettable experience in Murchison falls. He arranged transport, accomodation, dining, and tours at a very fair price. During the safari we were able to tour the park almost alone, and thanks to Apollos knowledge of good spots we got to see many rare animals. I would recommend Apollo and Big Predator Tours to anyone wanting to visit Ugandas parks, not just Murchison falls. You won't regret it!

Very good!! When we were in Uganda, we went for two weekends with Apollo on safari. We saw queen Elizabeth national park, Kibale forest, Murchison falls and ziwa Rhino sanctuary. Both times we had a wonderfull experience! Apollo is very trustworthy and everything was organized very good. The best part was chimpanzees tracking in Kibale forest. We also saw lions, elephants, giraffe, rhino's and lots of other animals.

Amazing safari, hikes and more! Apollo is an amazing organiser and guide. We went on two safari's with him. One to Queen Elisabeth Park and one to Murchison falls. Next to the amazing game drives we did in the parks, he also organised chimpansee tracking, a boat safari cruise and a hike up to the Falls. Because of the knowledge of Apollo about the best views, we saw a lot of animals and beautiful nature. Another thing why we booked him the second time is because the accomodation, food, safety and permits were all organised really well, which I think is also really important.

Game changer! We had an amazing time! Apollo is very knowledgeable about the wildlife and surroundings and is very enthusiastic all round, he gave us a tour specific to our needs. Apollo was also friendly enough to set us up completely with a tour and guide for the next day in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Our experience wouldn't have been the same without him!
