I’ve found that ultra-luxury safaris are best understood as a different way of travelling, rather than simply a more expensive safari. When I recommend this style, I’m usually thinking about travelers who value privacy, exceptional service, beautiful accommodation, highly personalized guiding, and the ability to remove unnecessary travel friction from the journey.
For me, the most important distinction is that ultra-luxury is not really about having the largest room or the fanciest bathroom. The real value comes from having more control over your time, staying in exceptional locations, avoiding unnecessary crowds, flying between remote areas when it makes sense, and having experienced guides who can adapt the safari around your interests. Current luxury-travel expectations increasingly place privacy, space, seamless logistics and specialist guiding above conventional ideas of five-star luxury.
I’ve also found that this style isn’t automatically right for everyone. If you would rather spend your money on a longer safari, more destinations, or simply more days in the bush, I may recommend a high-quality luxury or premium safari instead.
My advice is to choose ultra-luxury when the quality of the experience matters more to you than maximizing the number of destinations you visit. Browse my recommended tours below, or contact me if you’d like help choosing the right one.
The first mistake I see travelers make is assuming that paying more automatically makes a safari better. It doesn’t. I’ve seen beautifully designed camps in excellent locations that provide a far more memorable experience than much more expensive properties simply because the guiding, location and overall itinerary were better suited to the traveler.
I therefore recommend looking beyond the word “ultra-luxury.” Ask me where you’ll stay, whether you’ll have a private vehicle, how experienced the guides are, whether the property sits inside a private conservancy or concession, how you’ll move between destinations, and what is actually included in the rate. A beautiful lodge cannot compensate for an itinerary that spends too much time driving between places.
I also encourage travelers to decide what luxury actually means to them. If it means privacy, I would prioritize a small camp or exclusive-use property. If it means minimizing road transfers, I would consider fly-in connections. If it means exceptional wildlife guiding, I’d put more emphasis on the guide and location than on the room itself.
I would also avoid building an ultra-luxury itinerary simply to collect famous names. I’ve found that two or three carefully selected locations can be considerably better than moving every night, particularly when the goal is relaxation, wildlife and genuine immersion.
Finally, I recommend comparing the complete cost rather than comparing nightly room rates. Luxury safari pricing can vary enormously according to camp, season, location, privacy, flights and included experiences. Current 2026 market guidance places genuine ultra-luxury safaris substantially above standard luxury, with the highest-end experiences potentially reaching several thousand US dollars per person per night.
I recommend ultra-luxury strongly to travelers who don’t want their safari experience dictated by other guests. A private vehicle, small camp or exclusive-use property can give you far more control over your days.
For honeymoons, anniversaries and milestone journeys, I often recommend this style because the experience can feel genuinely personal rather than simply comfortable. Private dinners, secluded accommodation, bush experiences and carefully paced itineraries can make the journey feel distinctive without adding unnecessary activities.
If you’ve already stayed in excellent hotels around the world, I wouldn’t try to impress you simply with thread count. I’d focus instead on privacy, location, guiding, access and how seamlessly everything works together.
I particularly like ultra-luxury fly-in itineraries for travelers who have only a few days available. Flying between safari areas can replace long road transfers with more time experiencing the destination itself.
I recommend private guiding when wildlife is the main reason you’re traveling. You can spend longer at a sighting, change plans when something interesting happens and structure game drives around your priorities rather than those of a shared vehicle.
Some travelers aren’t simply looking for wildlife. They want exceptional camps, beautiful landscapes, outstanding food, thoughtful service and memorable experiences between game drives. For them, ultra-luxury can justify the additional investment.
I would probably recommend luxury rather than ultra-luxury if your main objective is simply excellent accommodation and outstanding wildlife without needing the highest level of exclusivity. In many cases, a carefully selected luxury camp delivers most of what makes a safari special at a considerably lower cost.
I may also steer you toward a longer mid-range or luxury safari if you have a fixed budget. I would rather give you ten meaningful days in Africa than compress your trip into a handful of ultra-expensive nights simply because the accommodation looks impressive.
If you enjoy the social side of travel, I would also consider a small-group safari. Sharing experiences with other travelers can be part of the enjoyment, whereas ultra-luxury generally puts greater emphasis on privacy and personalization.
Finally, I wouldn’t recommend ultra-luxury simply because you think you are expected to book it. Africa doesn’t become more wild because the lodge costs more. I recommend spending the additional money when the privacy, access, guiding, service and convenience genuinely matter to you.
I’ve found that the best ultra-luxury safaris aren’t the ones with the longest list of expensive extras. They’re the ones where every major decision has a purpose: the camp is in the right location, the guide suits the travelers, the transfers make sense, the pace isn’t exhausting, and there is enough time to actually enjoy being in Africa.
If you’re considering this style, I would therefore start with your priorities rather than a particular lodge. Tell me whether privacy, wildlife, photography, romance, relaxation, service, adventure or minimizing travel time matters most to you, and I can work backwards from that.
I also don’t think you should feel pressured to choose ultra-luxury simply because you’re willing to spend more. Sometimes I can create a better trip by combining a few exceptional properties with one or two excellent luxury camps, giving you more variety without paying the highest rate for every night.
When I describe an ultra-luxury safari, I mean a journey where I prioritize exceptional accommodation, privacy, personalized service, expert guiding and seamless logistics. I don’t define it simply by the price of the lodge. For me, the strongest ultra-luxury itineraries combine the right location, the right guide and the right level of privacy.
I think it can be, but only when you value what the additional money actually buys. I usually see the biggest benefits in private guiding, exclusive locations, premium camps, fly-in logistics and highly personalized service. If those things don’t matter much to you, I’d rather recommend a lower tier and put the savings toward more time in Africa.
I don’t use one fixed figure because the difference between ultra-luxury itineraries can be enormous. Current 2026 market pricing commonly places ultra-luxury experiences from roughly the low four figures per person per night into several thousand dollars, depending on the property, season, destination and inclusions. I always recommend asking for a complete quotation so you can see exactly what you’re paying for rather than comparing accommodation rates alone.
I usually recommend a private vehicle for an ultra-luxury safari, particularly when wildlife or photography is important to you. It gives me much more flexibility to shape the day around your interests and means you aren’t negotiating with other guests about where to go or how long to stay at a sighting. However, the exact arrangement depends on the camp, destination and itinerary, so I confirm this before booking.
I normally look for small, characterful camps, premium tented camps, luxury lodges, private suites or exclusive-use villas rather than large conventional hotels. Depending on the destination, you may have spacious canvas accommodation, private decks, plunge pools, outdoor showers or highly personalized dining. I focus less on how impressive the room looks in photographs and more on whether the property gives you the location, privacy and experience you actually want.
I can recommend it for families, particularly when parents value privacy and want the itinerary built around their children rather than around a fixed group schedule. However, I don’t automatically choose the most expensive camp because some properties are much better suited to children than others. I would look at age restrictions, family accommodation, activities and guide flexibility before making my recommendation.
Yes, and this is one of the reasons I often recommend this style for travelers who know what they want. I can adjust the destinations, number of nights, accommodation, flights, private guiding, activities and pace around your priorities. I usually start by understanding what you want the safari to feel like before deciding which properties belong in the itinerary.
I make that decision based on your available time and tolerance for long road transfers. If you have limited time or want the journey to feel especially seamless, I often recommend flying between safari areas. If you enjoy seeing landscapes and communities along the way, a private road safari can still be an excellent choice.
I wouldn’t automatically recommend it simply because it is your first safari. I would first understand what matters most to you, because an excellent private luxury safari can be a better first experience than an unnecessarily expensive ultra-luxury itinerary. If privacy, comfort and seamless service are high priorities for you, however, I can see a strong reason to consider it.
I usually ask one simple question: what would you actually notice if you spent the extra money? If your answer is greater privacy, fewer crowds, private guiding, exceptional camps, faster transfers and highly personalized service, ultra-luxury may be worthwhile. If you’d mainly notice that the room was nicer, I’d probably recommend luxury instead and use the difference to improve the itinerary.

Unforgettable safari and tour of Murchison Falls! Apollo took my family and I to a wonderful Safari and tour of Murchison falls. I have also travelled with him by myself before. Apollo is kind, funny and a meticulous planner. He is punctual, has excellent local contacts, and superb knowledge of wildlife and culture. Asking him a question is like consulting an encyclopedia, he always knows! Apollo took us for an unforgettable experience in Murchison falls. He arranged transport, accomodation, dining, and tours at a very fair price. During the safari we were able to tour the park almost alone, and thanks to Apollos knowledge of good spots we got to see many rare animals. I would recommend Apollo and Big Predator Tours to anyone wanting to visit Ugandas parks, not just Murchison falls. You won't regret it!Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Amazing safari, hikes and more! Apollo is an amazing organiser and guide. We went on two safari's with him. One to Queen Elisabeth Park and one to Murchison falls. Next to the amazing game drives we did in the parks, he also organised chimpansee tracking, a boat safari cruise and a hike up to the Falls. Because of the knowledge of Apollo about the best views, we saw a lot of animals and beautiful nature. Another thing why we booked him the second time is because the accomodation, food, safety and permits were all organised really well, which I think is also really important.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()
