MY ADVICE BEFORE YOU CHOOSE NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK

Don’t Choose Nyungwe Just Because You Want to See “Wildlife”

My first piece of advice is to understand what kind of wildlife experience you are choosing. Nyungwe is primarily a forest and primate destination, not a conventional savannah game-drive destination. I recommend it when your interests include chimpanzees, monkeys, birds, plants, hiking and rainforest scenery.

Nyungwe is home to chimpanzees and numerous other primates, including Ruwenzori black-and-white colobus and L’Hoest’s monkeys. The wider ecosystem also supports hundreds of bird species and an extraordinary variety of plants.

I Recommend Allowing Enough Time

I don’t advise rushing through Nyungwe simply to say you’ve visited it. If chimpanzee trekking is your priority, I would build the itinerary around the trek rather than treating it as a quick stop between Kigali and another destination.

The chimpanzee experience can involve an early start and walking through uneven forest terrain. I also remind travelers that chimpanzee sightings are wildlife encounters, not guaranteed performances; the animals move through the forest and canopy, so patience is part of the experience.

Think About Your Fitness

I always ask travelers honestly about their comfort with walking before recommending particular Nyungwe activities. Some trails are relatively easy, while others are considerably more demanding; Rwanda’s official hiking information, for example, describes trails ranging from short, comfortable walks to routes designed for experienced hikers.

I don’t believe you need to be an extreme hiker to enjoy Nyungwe, but I do recommend choosing activities that match your fitness level rather than assuming every forest experience will be easy.

Don’t Skip the Canopy Walkway

I usually recommend including the Nyungwe Canopy Walkway if your itinerary allows. It gives me a completely different way of experiencing the forest because I can look across the treetops rather than simply walking underneath them. Visit Rwanda describes it as a walkway suspended above a ravine in the rainforest, offering a distinctive perspective over the canopy and surrounding wildlife.

Consider More Than Chimpanzees

I also encourage travelers not to measure Nyungwe entirely by whether they see chimpanzees. The forest itself is part of the experience, and hiking, birding, waterfalls, primate viewing and scenic viewpoints can make the destination worthwhile even when wildlife behaves unpredictably.

I particularly like combining Nyungwe with other parts of Rwanda because it creates a more complete trip. A route combining Kigali, Nyungwe and Volcanoes National Park, for example, can bring together rainforest, chimpanzees, gorillas and Rwanda’s remarkable landscapes. Visit Rwanda itself promotes itineraries combining Nyungwe’s chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk with Volcanoes National Park experiences.

WHAT I CAN EXPECT FROM NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK

When I plan a Nyungwe itinerary, I set expectations around forest exploration rather than traditional game viewing.

Accommodation

• I can arrange stays ranging from comfortable lodges to more upscale forest properties depending on your budget.

• I recommend staying reasonably close to your planned activities because early starts can make long transfers unnecessarily tiring.

• I also consider whether you want a simple base for exploring or an accommodation experience that makes the rainforest part of the holiday itself.

Transportation

• I generally plan Nyungwe as part of a road itinerary through Rwanda or combine it with suitable domestic connections where practical.

• Rwanda’s road network makes it relatively straightforward to connect its major tourism areas by road.

• I pay particular attention to transfer times because Nyungwe sits in Rwanda’s mountainous southwest and journeys can take longer than they appear on a map.

Activities

I can build your itinerary around:

• Chimpanzee trekking

• Canopy Walkway experience

• Forest hiking

• Primate viewing

• Birdwatching

• Waterfalls and scenic trails

• Tea plantation experiences

• Nature and conservation experiences

• Newer adventure activities where appropriate, including the Nyungwe Canopy Zipline and Gisakura Rope Course. These were introduced as additional tourism experiences in 2025.

Wildlife Opportunities

• I recommend Nyungwe primarily for primates rather than Big Five wildlife.

• Chimpanzees are one of the major attractions, alongside several monkey species.

• I also recommend it strongly to birdwatchers because the forest has an impressive diversity of birdlife, including Albertine Rift endemics.

Daily Pace

• I usually build Nyungwe days around early starts for primate activities and enough time to recover afterward.

• I avoid filling every afternoon with another demanding activity.

• If you’re staying several nights, I prefer mixing active experiences with slower forest, lodge or cultural experiences.

Budget Expectations

• I don’t consider Nyungwe a destination where choosing the cheapest possible option is always the best decision.

• The overall price depends heavily on accommodation, chimpanzee permits, transportation, activities and the wider Rwanda itinerary.

• I recommend deciding which experiences matter most before reducing accommodation or travel quality to save money.

Typical Trip Length

• I usually recommend 2–3 nights for travelers who want to experience Nyungwe properly.

• I can make a shorter visit work when the main objective is a specific activity, but I prefer giving travelers enough time for chimpanzee trekking and another forest experience.

• Longer stays make more sense for serious hikers, birdwatchers, photographers and travelers who want to explore multiple trails.

WHO I RECOMMEND NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK FOR

I Recommend Nyungwe for Primate Enthusiasts

If chimpanzees and monkeys interest you more than ticking off the Big Five, I think Nyungwe deserves serious consideration. The forest provides an opportunity to observe primates in a completely different environment from open savannah parks.

I Recommend It for Adventure Travelers

I particularly recommend Nyungwe if you enjoy being active while traveling. Hiking through rainforest, crossing the canopy walkway and exploring trails provides a more immersive experience than simply sitting in a safari vehicle.

I Recommend It for Couples

For couples, I like Nyungwe because it offers a quieter and more intimate side of Rwanda. Forest walks, beautiful scenery, comfortable lodges and the possibility of combining the destination with Lake Kivu or Volcanoes National Park can create a varied itinerary.

I Recommend It for Birdwatchers

Nyungwe is especially appealing if birds are one of your priorities. Rwanda’s tourism information records around 300 bird species in the forest, including numerous species associated with the Albertine Rift.

I Recommend It for Travelers Who Want More Than Gorillas

If you’re already considering Rwanda because of mountain gorilla trekking, I often recommend adding Nyungwe rather than making the entire trip about one experience. The combination gives you two very different primate encounters and allows you to experience Rwanda’s forests more completely.

I Recommend It for Repeat East Africa Travelers

Travelers who have already experienced Kenya or Tanzania often appreciate Nyungwe because it feels fundamentally different. I can use it to introduce rainforest ecology, primate tracking and hiking into an itinerary that might otherwise be dominated by savannah landscapes.

WHO MAY PREFER SOMETHING ELSE

I Wouldn’t Prioritize Nyungwe for Big Five Enthusiasts

If your main objective is lions, elephants, buffaloes, rhinos and leopards, I would direct you toward a destination better suited to classic savannah game viewing. Rwanda’s Akagera National Park is the country’s primary traditional safari destination, while Nyungwe is much more focused on rainforest biodiversity and primates.

I May Recommend Another Destination for Travelers Who Dislike Hiking

If you want a holiday where you spend most of your time relaxing or viewing wildlife from a vehicle, I wouldn’t automatically recommend Nyungwe. Several of its most rewarding experiences involve walking, and some trails can be demanding.

I May Recommend a Different Itinerary for Very Young Children

I consider the child’s age, walking ability and interest in wildlife before recommending chimpanzee trekking. For families with very young children, I may prefer a more flexible Rwanda itinerary with activities that are easier to adapt.

I Wouldn’t Recommend Rushing Nyungwe

If your Rwanda trip is extremely short and you are trying to combine gorillas, wildlife, culture and several other attractions, I may advise leaving Nyungwe for another visit rather than squeezing it into an already exhausting itinerary.

My advice is simple: choose Nyungwe because you want the rainforest experience, not because you feel you should add another national park to your itinerary.
