Imagine yourself: sunlight filtering through emerald leaves, mist swirling around ancient trees, and then, the undeniable thrill of observing a majestic mountain gorilla in its natural habitat. But before you pack your hiking boots and camera, one question lingers: how long does gorilla trekking in Uganda actually take?
Here are 5 captivating facts to whet your wanderlust and answer your burning question:
1. It’s not a sprint, it’s a soulful safari: Forget quick tourist jaunts. Gorilla treks are immersive experiences, typically lasting between 3 and 8 hours. The exact duration depends on several factors, like the chosen gorilla family’s location, terrain difficulty, and group fitness level. So, prepare for an adventure, not a race!
2. Patience is a gorilla tracker’s virtue: These gentle giants aren’t stationary amusement park exhibits. They roam their rainforest home freely, meaning your trek could be a short 30-minute stroll or an exhilarating 6-hour hike (including breaks). Remember, the thrill of the unexpected adds to the magic!
3. Time flies when you’re having an ape encounter: Once you find your assigned gorilla family, the real treasure unfolds. You’ll be granted a precious one hour to observe their fascinating social interactions, playful youngsters, and heartwarming family dynamics. Trust us, that hour will feel like it flew by in a whirlwind of awe and wonder.
4. Choose your trek wisely: Uganda boasts two breathtaking national parks for gorilla encounters: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi treks tend to be longer, with some exceeding 6 hours due to its denser vegetation. Mgahinga, on the other hand, offers more open terrain, often resulting in shorter treks.
5. The reward outweighs the walk (literally): Regardless of the duration, remember, you’re trekking through a UNESCO World Heritage Site, teeming with diverse wildlife and breathtaking scenery. Every step is an opportunity to soak in the rich biodiversity and witness the unique ecosystem up close. The once-in-a-lifetime encounter with gorillas will undoubtedly overshadow any temporary fatigue.
So, there you have it! While the trek duration varies, the experience itself is guaranteed to be unforgettable. Remember, packing comfortable hiking gear, maintaining physical fitness, and embracing the adventure will make your Ugandan gorilla trek a truly awe-inspiring journey.
Now, lace up your boots, grab your sense of wonder, and get ready to embark on a gorilla adventure you’ll never forget!

Gustav L08/01/2024Unforgettable safari and tour of Murchison Falls! Apollo took my family and I to a wonderful Safari and tour of Murchison falls. I have also travelled with him by myself before. Apollo is kind, funny and a meticulous planner. He is punctual, has excellent local contacts, and superb knowledge of wildlife and culture. Asking him a question is like consulting an encyclopedia, he always knows! Apollo took us for an unforgettable experience in Murchison falls. He arranged transport, accomodation, dining, and tours at a very fair price. During the safari we were able to tour the park almost alone, and thanks to Apollos knowledge of good spots we got to see many rare animals. I would recommend Apollo and Big Predator Tours to anyone wanting to visit Ugandas parks, not just Murchison falls. You won't regret it!Jasmin K10/12/2023Great experience I can easily recommend booking your safari and chimp trecking tour with Apollo. He and our driver are great guides and planned a perfect weekend trip to us according to our wishes. :)Tourist1156569900518/11/2023Recommended We loved the tour. When we were in Uganda, we went for two weekends with Apollo on safari. We saw queen Elizabeth national park, Kibale forest, Murchison falls and ziwa Rhino sanctuary. Both times we had a wonderfull experience! Apollo is very trustworthy and everything was organized very good. The best part was chimpanzees tracking in Kibale forest. We also saw lions, elephants, giraffe, rhino's and lots of other animals.Jill L15/11/2023Amazing safari, hikes and more! Apollo is an amazing organiser and guide. We went on two safari's with him. One to Queen Elisabeth Park and one to Murchison falls. Next to the amazing game drives we did in the parks, he also organised chimpansee tracking, a boat safari cruise and a hike up to the Falls. Because of the knowledge of Apollo about the best views, we saw a lot of animals and beautiful nature. Another thing why we booked him the second time is because the accomodation, food, safety and permits were all organised really well, which I think is also really important.idilay k08/11/2023Amazing trip Our trip was amazing! We went on a Safari to Queen Elizabeth and did chimpansee tracking in Kibale with Apollo and it really exceeded our expectations.
